THIS YEAR SEES THE 75TH YEAR OF R REDPATH LTD, SUPPLIERS OF EVERYTHING ELECTRICAL. REDPATH’S HISTORY STRETCHES ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE CONCLUSION OF WORLD WAR II.
In 1945 Reg Redpath terminated his employment as an electrical engineer with AD Riley & Co in Wellington and returned to his hometown in Christchurch to purchase the electrical and engineering supplier AJ Russel ltd. from his cousin Archie Russell. It was a small business with a total staff of 4 and was situated in a portion of Russel Thomas car repair garage at 256 St Asaph St.
Ralph Redpath began working for his father at the ripe age of 12, when he made after school deliveries on his bike. He recalls that one of his regular runs was to Vale & Co Plastics and Die Casting Division (Now PDL/ Schneider) a trading relationship that continues to today.
In 1960 Ralph Redpath took over the day-to-day running of the company and a few years later the business shifted from 256 to 312 St Asaph Street, with staff numbers doubling to eight. Nearly twenty years later they purchased land immediately behind them and had a purpose build warehouse erected at 55 Ferry Road, where the Christchurch Branch remained until 2018 when they relocated back to their street of origin, St Asaph St.
Always a Family business Redpaths has already passed through three generations Reg Redpath to Ralph Redpath, who retired from the daily running of the business in 2001, leaving Directors Tony and Gayle Saunders (Ralphs Daughter), Don Hawker, Brent Cameron and Steve Zwarts at the helm. The tradition of Family as a big part of the Redpaths brand is today continuing through a fourth generation with Tony and Gayle’s son Callen joining the business in 2011 and their daughter Chelsea in 2019.
As CEO, Tony Saunders headed up the expansion of the Redpaths network which has grown to 15 branches and 105 staff throughout the South Island from Nelson to Invercargill.
Redpaths is a popular and successful electrical merchandising entity in the South Island. Their continued success attributes to the friendly and knowledgeable service that is, and has always been, supplied by the excellent staff from Reg, Ralph and now Tony and Gayle Saunders and their teams.
